Get rid of the posing trunks! I know I'm probably gonna get stoned for this but here goes: I have nothing against bodybuilders posing in whatever tiny trunks they wish - and to be honest it doesn't bother me or put me off. Now I am currently building some muscles and wish to (maybe) someday compete. BUT you will not catch me DEAD in the posing trunks these guys are wearing - it is just not me! I am sorry - forget it - no way! Now the problem is that this immediately take me out of the loop to ever compete because the only way I'll go on stage ever is in a boxer size trunk like a neat short pants kinda thing...(call me what you want - but this is me!) This bring me to my next point: Most of my friends is not in bodybuilding at all and they think bodybuilding competitions are the biggest joke - wanna know why? - number one reason because of the tiny posing trunks. Making a bodybuilding compo more flexible regarding trunk choice can just add to the sport and it's credibility from ignorant outsiders and may just make it able for me to compete one day...Am I alone on this...?
-well...the point of a bodybuilding competition IS to show the body.
-Yes, you are alone on this.
-Yeah I hate the tiny trunks...get them to more of the kind from Arnold's day.
-I always preferred the larger cut trunks that Arnold wore. I just don't like them other ones. It's too much like they are wearing a g-string...
-sounds like you have something to hide (even more)
-come on guys - are there no room or flexibility regarding this - So don't tell me you cannot appreciate a body in a neat boxer size trunk - what muscles do you really wanna see anyway...?
-I do agree...I don't like the thought of a posing suit riding up my butt....The Arnold one wins...
-The point is to show to the judges your legs. With boxers on you can't judge the legs properly because they are concealed.
-Yeah look at this pic...look at the guy (Frank Zane) on the left and the guy (Markus Ruhl) on the right. Frank Zane's trunks look soo much better than Ruhl's super skinny ones.
-I don't have a problem with Frank Zane's or Arnold's trunks. I just don't think that boxer trunks, like the long ones, are realistic for a bodybuilding comp. I actually like frank Zane's posing trunks better than Ruhl's
-Yeah I gotta say, male gluteal development doesn't interest me, even when it's impressive, it's gross. I prefer Arnold's too. They allow for adequate leg judging without having to tolerate a buncha ripped male asses on stage. I don't doubt the thong thing is driving some fans away from the sport.
-I prefer Zane's by far. These new g-string looking trunks look like the guys are almost expecting to have people in the crowd start tossing dollar bills at them.
-That's it mate! (I admit it looks a little bit dorky against Frank Zane's ones - but so be it) Is trunks like this actually allowed in a competition - or will you be marked down?
-Why does it matter? You will look more out of place if you wear something bigger...and you might not get judged properly because of it. I honestly don't see what the big deal is?
-Ask any average guy in the street what he thinks of another guy wearing a speedo - you will not hear positive comments - bodybuilders onstage wear significantly less than the "standard" speedo. I'm sorry but bottom line - the average dude does not think much of the bodybuilders posing in their tiny trunks - it takes a LOT of credibility away from the sport plus there are (maybe a lot?) people out there that wanna get involved but is not prepare to prank around in these tiny trunks. EVERY normal guy likes muscles, but VERY FEW like these tiny trunks! We're all different man - so why not make provision for that and give the sport a higher credibility rating? A competition can be set up in such a fashion that a competitor will not be marked down for bigger trunks - have a open section where the dudes can show of with their tiny trunks if they want too. And why is it bothering me know? - because I actually thinking of competing one day but NOT in these tiny trunks. Do any (straight) guy finds the bum muscles of another guy appealing? It looks disgusting no matter how good it is...(just my opinion)
-It doesn't matter what the average joe on the street thinks. Bodybuilding comps are for evaluating ones muscles....not to gain credibility from the non-bodybuilders. Posing trunks are worn to show off as much of the muscle as possible so they can evaluate you correctly. They are not going to make an exception because some people are embarrassed to wear posing trunks and to gain higher credibility by the average joe. Well, you know what.....I might be looking at guys but I'm not evaluating them in a sexual way so it doesn't matter. Don't be a girly man!
-So what you saying is we are closed for discussion and will not consider that there are people that wanna compete with a different costume that still shows significant muscle? It's a bit narrow brother. Why not create mainstream interest - why cut out the biggest portion of "normal" dudes? It does not makes sense...I don't say the tiny brigade must stop I am just saying be more flexible...Have you checked the Arnie & Zane pics in this Thread...?
-Well, I can't comment on how small it has to be because I'm not a judge. "Normal dudes" aren't competing. If the muscle can be judged properly I think it's fine but I don't know how flexible can be allowed because like I said...I'm not a judge.
-You said "normal dudes aren't competing so therefor we do not consider them." (if I understand your statement correct...) My question - have you EVER heard of any dude who doesn't like muscles? - ALL like to be built well even if it is just a model look - muscles is important to EVERY man. Don't you think if the "stigma" or part there off can be removed (and believe me these tiny trunks create a stigma!) then MANY more Joe average will be interested (since it is more "manly" for him and not so weird anymore) = more money = bigger sport = everyone scores! ...and all it take is a little flexibility from the people controlling the sport. I know not me or you will get them to change but can't we get the discussion started at least...
-i totally agree with the thread starter. GET RID OF POSING TRUNKS...they totally conceal the inner glutes so bbers should pose naked
-i would prefer to go on stage naked than wear those posing trunks. no joke. they could judge the whole package. if fact i'd jump out on stage and shout "judge this"
-Ja boys, lots of talk and no show I tell you - I wanna see how you stand there proud at -5 degrees with your shrinked dicks and show off your muscles! anyways - I presume (hope) you guys are just joking...Still stick to my point: Get the mainstream into bodybuilding - accommodate the "average" dude (me!) and be more flexible with posing trunk size BUT PLEASE force the wearing of trunks and keep the above two posters off stage!
-Everyone I know who isn't into bodybuilding thinks the same about bodybuilding comps. Wearing a little bigger posing trunks wouldn't change their mind because they are still half naked. Honestly, I don't think it would make that big of a difference.
-You might be right - I must admit sitting here at the tip of Africa does not really give me the edge on what Joe public in the USA or Europe feels about the subject. I talk from my perspective and the people I know here in Cape Town, SA. So I think I'll wait a bit to see what some other dudes think on the subject...Meanwhile I'll stay off stage!
-The point of posing trunks is that the competitors can display all of their quads and hams, and some of their glutes, since leg muscles are, after all very important. I have no problem with posing trunks, though I do not think I would wear them myself, but that's ok, since I will never compete.
-agree and understand...BUT - check out the two pics in this Thread of Frank Zane and Arnold. This is what I mean. You can still see everything you are supposed to see and it's still decent. Does it have to be soooooooooo small?
-Actually ironically I heard this debate on a local radio show today. They said that the small skimpy trunks take away from masculinity. They had callers call in and only one person liked the skimpy ones(it was a dude) men and women said that they thought the small skimpy trunks looked just too dumb.

-Were the people commenting bodybuilders? or judges? Probably not....
-they weren't bbs or judges..but it shows what the public opinion is
-"Yeah look at this pic...look at the guy (Frank Zane) on the left and the guy (Markus Ruhl) on the right. Frank Zane's trunks look soo much better than Ruhl's super skinny ones."...see I don't really think their is much difference. And I think the thread starter is talking about wearing something more like boxers so even the zane apparel would be a little much for him. as far as the perception of bodybuilding this would not change it. Outsiders are not going to say "ahhh a bunch of guys posing in boxers is way cooler than guys in speedo's". To the general public it will not make a difference
-I like my trunks actually since it helps bring out the V body shape
-You don't have to wear ones quite as tiny as the one Markus had on. At a local comp you can often wear ones a bit more like Arnold's and Zane's. But to be honest with you put on the Zane one then put on a typical one worn today. There is honestly virtually no difference. It is still tight as hell on your junk, there is honestly not much difference. Also, when you look at the guys today they often look like they have small trunks because they hike them up their arses to show off their glutes. You don't have to do that.
-I don't get what the big deal is... it's a few inches of difference at the most. I mean either way you are standing up there practically naked, I don't see what difference a few inches makes
-Like I said though, the stigma will not be removed as long as there is drug use, gay for pay, and men onstage getting judged by their physique. The issue of posing trunk size is the LAST thing the IFBB needs to worry about right now. The fact is it is a sport where almost completely naked men get onstage and are judged. It is a sport I love. But since the very essence of the sport deals with almost nude men onstage, it will not make a difference if posing trunk length is longer by 3 inches
-Been there, worn that! I agree that the speedo should be outlawed and anyone other than a competitive swimmer should probably be shot for wearing them, I have however competed in the past and wore the type of brief posing trunks you mention, once you're on stage with all the other guys wearing the same it's not that bad. I would say that what we wear on stage is the least of our worries, I worry more about my pec tear and calves, LOL!
-I don't think (sorry, I hope!) my ass is not the best in the business! I really don't wanna compare asses with another dude!
-The difference is that, in bodybuilding competitions I look at the glutes as any other body part... Legs, Arms, Chest.... There is no sexual innuendo tied into it... once you start looking at bodybuilding like that.. then your views will change. I agree with you I don't wanna see some dude in a thong walking down the street, that would be hella gay and I would probably slap him silly... But in bodybuilding comps it's a different story...
-Guys if you wanna show all muscles, why stop with a posing trunk, why not wearing just a patch in front (probably gonna be a small patch!). It just doesn't make sense - either wear close to nothing showing everything, or wear a decent trunk covering up what is generally considered private aspects of a person. But now it is somewhere in between. Wanna know why I am on the subject: Had this crazy idea that maybe one day I'll do a show, but not in these trunks the guys are wearing - NEVER.
-i think once that when you dieted down and have striated glutes, you will want to show it because dieting down low enough to see your glutes is one of the hardest thing to do.
-Are you aware that bodybuilding is ALL about striated glutes
-Why would another man be interested to see those muscles on a guy or want to judge it? Certain parts of the human body is private and should stay that way. No matter how hard you've worked to achieve something, if it is private stuff, it doesn't make it right or acceptable to show it off...Now back to my original point: As long as bodybuilders parade in these tiny trunks on stage, the majority of the general population will always consider them strange and weird because the average guy would not want to be caught dead in a tiny trunk like that. And as such bodybuilding immediately becomes an "outcast" sport to the majority of the average male. I am not shooting bodybuilding down, I love the sport but HATE the tiny trunks.
-The judges really couldn't care less about homophobes and people who don't want to bare that 2-3 inches extra. They look for gluterial development, and more importantly "striated glutes" are one of the final signs of very low bodyfat and solid conditioning. BBers of Arnold's time didn't have striated glutes, so they had nothing to show.
-I hear what you say and respect it. However, (of course you knew there would be a "however"!) in the end the big driving force behind the sport is the money. Bringing "respectability" to the sport will "open" the sport to the average male. Meaning where 1 out of 20 is now interested, you will probably get 10 out of 20. Meaning 10 times more revenue generated. So why not create a new division (completely separate from the current) where the average joe is targeted as the consumer. Average joe is not interested now because of the "image" [tiny trunks, aspects of posing routines, etc...] Take "farm boy". He will go to the barn everyday, lift some heavy wood or something and dream of his muscles growing. (I have not met a guy yet who would not want bigger muscles.) But "farm boy" would NEVER even consider bodybuilding because of the "image". Change the image via creating a new division with different approaches and "farm boy" just might be interested! Make the image more respectable and viola, you got a industry generating enough revenue to rival the american economy. It's not so difficult, just create a division with a different approach in judging [ie: more respectable clothing/different scoring systems, but still with the same basic principles.] All I am saying is: OPEN UP THE DOORS! Right now it is closed. Make the appeal wider and everyone benefits. I am not suggesting anything must change or be taken away. I am suggesting that the visibility and market appeal of the sport is increased drastically.
-I'm just saying.... You won't catch me wearing any underwear... Pose naked
-Exactly. either wear something decent or nothing. Why bother with these tiny little trunks. Then go bald! But, hopefully when they do decide to go bald, they will also create a division for decent trunk wearing dudes.
-Why are you bothered it's not like we are admiring their crotch area. (well most of us anyway) If you are comfortable with your sexuality it's not a problem
-It's all part of the game. Baseball players don't wear shoulder pads and golfers don't wear helmets and bodybuilders don't wear much of anything. If you're worried about it, maybe bodybuilding comps aren't for you. And if you're worried about what other people are gonna think about you because of posing trunks, they aren't the ones with the problem.
-honestly, they really should wear nothing
-it was good enough for the greeks to be naked during sport...by and large the money that IS coming in to pro bbing is from the homosexual side of the audience. the general public will never be into bodybuilding the way it is in to contact sports and baseball. why would they want to see someone just posing on a stage when they can get that muscle fix and hero worshipping done while watching football or rugby or something?
yes the general population of men usually wants more muscle, but not to the point of being even a low level pro or mid level amateur even. they'd rather look like a linebacker or a swimmer for the most part. as long as bodybuilding is about being bigger and leaner than the average, and isn't a contact sport, it will never be mainstream. you're trying to get people to latch onto a very niche activity that only the VERY few gifted can properly compete in. where as any schmuck can go out to his backyard and get a pick up game of baseball, basketball, or football going. no matter what you try to do, even having nude women posing with the men, you're not going to get anything like mass public appeal for this "sport".
-The reason the tiny posing trunks are good because it allows the competitors to show off their striated glutes (Ronnie Coleman for example).
-I am sorry, but i totally disagree. It is like telling the Miss America contestants that they should eliminate the swimsuit section because some females are scared to show off their legs or stomach. As I stated before, the small posing trunks are good because it lets you show off your striated glutes. And if the normal people think its weird that bodybuilders wear tiny posing trunks, then don't come to the show. If you are a true bodybuilder, you know that there is no homosexuality behind looking at men posing in tiny trunks. That is the sport. As long as their dicks aren't showing, it is fine to me!
-Damn, I gotta post again. Again, I disagree with opening up the doors to any regular Joe Schmo. I like the fact that bodybuilding is such an elite sport and only a small population is dedicated enough to step on stage. I have competed in the past and I loved the fact that I have engaged in the hardest and most dedicated sport in the world. IF we let any Joe Schmo step on stage, the sport of bodybuilding goes downhill!
- Hear what you and some other bodybuilding dudes are saying on this posing trunks issue. My standpoint however does not change since I will never wear a trunk like that in public - but then again (and I think this is the important point), I do not consider myself to be aiming (anymore) to be a bodybuilder, but simply a fitness enthusiast. Obviously disliking the trunks the bodybuilder guys are wearing (and refusing to ever do so) "disqualifies" me from the sport. So, "VIVA THE FITTNESS ENTHUSIAST!" See ya on the beach in decent trunks but won't see ya on-stage..
-It just baffles me to why you wont wear a posing trunk in public. And though it is in public, its not like its on the beach. It's for a bodybuilding show and the only public are bodybuilding fans! Don't get me wrong, I would NEVER EVER walk around the beach or the outside with a posing trunk on LOL..I never have and never will. But, for contests, its a totally different context. just my opinion. Peace out!
-I feel the current posing trunk bodybuilders are wearing is not a decent piece of clothing. Certain aspects of the person's body is private and should remain so. If your sport requires you to stand naked in front of Public or sport fans, would you do it? Certainly each of us have a moral code. Do we honor that code or is it meaningless? Sure not everyone's moral code is the same. The three cornerstones determining ones moral code is: your faith, upbringing and culture. But it's not so much about your level of moral code but more a matter whether you adhere to it or not. We live in a time where nothing matters but just to get to the point of pleasure/power/winning no matter what. It makes the world a sick and shallow place indeed. In the end for me, it's about my own integrity. If I sacrifice my moral code for ANYTHING, I sacrifice my integrity. My integrity means everything to me and I am not prepared to lower my moral code simply because the media/judges/fellow bodybuilders, etc. requires me to. I have to live with myself and respect myself and most of all my child needs to look up to me for guidance. What example do I set when I brush aside my moral code every time I "want" something (be that to win a bodybuilding competitions or whatever? Note: I am not attacking bodybuilders! I am simply raising the issue because the current competition system does not leave any room.
-nudity has nothing to do with any moral code i have. neither does the surface area of any clothing i happen to be wearing. morality is what you use to determine rights from wrongs, not how modest and insecure you are about certain portions of your body.
-For the record, English is my 2nd language. I might not always use the correct words at times, but I think the message I try to convey should come across clear enough? I stand by what I said.
-I don't understand why posing trunks have gotten frikin' tiny, it's stupid. Are the ass muscles that important nowadays? Because that's really the only extra thing you see with smaller trunks. I think that trunks like that would be fine, or even slightly down the leg, but nothing major. You need to see leg development, so boxer-sized trunks are outta the question, but I don't see why things have gotten smaller and smaller, it's ridiculous.
-I have no desire to view men's assess I don't think it is part of bodybuilding. Even though the ass is a large muscle group having to see it almost to the very "hole" doesn't really make any sense.
-Before reading this thread I never noticed the posing trunks and the differences between today and years ago; however, now that I think about it, my opinion is they are in the disgusting category. I can't imagine wearing them and feeling comfortable about it.
-if you aren't willing to put on a little posing trunk for one day then you are not taking bodybuilding seriously, what's the big deal the point of them are to show your leg muscles, one you cant see with boxers on
